Improving Student Learning By Improving Student Writing

This blog was intended as a resource for Ursuline College faculty looking for strategies on how to improve student writing and writing instruction. It was administered by Frederick Wright, Ph.D. The blog is now defunct, but remains as an archive currently.

Amherst College Online Resources for Writers: A helpful collection of writing materials that your students and yourself may find useful to refer to from time to time
Calibrated Peer Review: A computer based peer review system that you can set up for your students
Coastal Carolina University Kimbel Library Anti-Plagiarism Site: Provides some helpful advice on how to get students to avoid plagiarism and what to do about it if it does occur
Faculty Focus: This link takes you to the "Keys to Designing Effective Writing and Research Assignments" report, but the site also has other useful resources
George Mason University Writing Across The Curriculum: A great site with useful advice on teaching with writing, and be sure to check out their writing guides for various disciplines
Guide to Grammar and Writing: A useful site for a grammar lesson, courtesy of Capital Community College Foundation
Indiana University School of Education Plagiarism Website: This site helps students to understand what plagiarism is and how to avoid it, even including a test for students to take to demonstrate that they understand plagiarism and will avoid it in their own work
National Council of Teachers of English Beliefs about Teaching Writing: A very good compass to follow when using writing in the classroom
Online Writing Teacher: Scott Warnock's Blog with useful advice about teaching writing in a hybrid/online course
The Purdue Online Writing Lab: A good site overall, but especially useful to refer students to when they are having difficulty with a specific aspect of writing
The Quill: Ursuline's online showcase for student academic writing
University of Denver Writing Beyond Writing Classes Document by Doug Hesse: This pdf (1.1MB) is a nice overview of how to incorporate writing into courses across the curriculum
University of North Carolina Writing Center Handouts: Another helpful collection of writing materials that your students and yourself may find useful to refer to from time to time
Ursuline Gallery Portion of the National Gallery of Writing: This site is part of the National Council of Teachers of English's National Day on Writing associated site and showcases writing by people associated with Ursuline
WAC Clearinghouse: Great site devoted to writing across the curriculum
